About
Bry first became interested in Natural Selection around the 1.0 era yet didn't give it much attention and soon went back to playing whatever game I was playing at the time (think it was UnrealTournament.) However, as I often do I soon became interested in Natural-Selection again and decided to give a proper go. Joining a 1.03 server I began to thoroughly enjoy the unique gameplay aspects of NS.
As things progressed a community quickly developed across a group of servers I played on and as those servers began to grow stale I decided to setup my own server and that's exactly what I did. At first a server was setup on my friends dedicated server box (being allowed to use up to 50% of the CPU) and a community was born. However, the server soon proved to be fairly popular with a strong community focused around it. Yet, this almost proved to be its undoing. NS servers were not known for their stability and with the limited resources the server soon began to suffer. Perpetual and myself soon began to look at solutions yet nothing seemed to have the effect we wanted.
Eventually we decided the only solution was to rent our own dedicated server and that's exactly what we did. As the community grew we again outgrew our server and we purchased our own Intel Dual Xenon Server and Co-Located it up in London. Where it remains to this date
While this was going on though we was feverously upgrading our website starting off with a simply forums visited regularly by a few die hards we slowly upgraded it into a full blown NS community portal in late 2004. Wanting to set ourselves a little bit apart from other server communities we decided to do a few things differently. having a huge amount of webspace available we setup one of the most complete NS related download sites hosting anything and everything related to Natural-Selection. From every single NS version ever released, to server files, hundreds of custom maps, media, trailers and more.
During the transition from NS 1.04 to version 2.0 to version 3.0 community members and non community members a like began to yearn for the old days of 1.04 where lifeforms were limited to the number of hives and games lasted 45 minutes +. Yet, while this happened so were we introduced to another little thing Steam. 1.04 simply did not work well with Steam. However, after we tweaked some of the coding options in 1.04, changing a few options and creating a simple installer program we was able to not only get 1.04 working well on Steam but, able to be ran alongside the existing version.
This lead to numerous fun nostalgic filled weekends not only for the BryNS community but for NS as a whole as numerous other servers began to run their own 1.04 weekends using the steam installer we created.
Yet the community could not handle the virtual death of the ns community as the official website and forums were hacked and no new versions were released NS began to die and people lost interest in the game.
In May 2009 though, Natural-Selection was reborn with the release of a new teaser video for the long awaited Natural-Selection 2. Pre-orders went up the very same day and the NS community was reborn.
